At about 10 a.m. Sherwood was marched from the jail, next to the present-day Old Donation Episcopal Church, down a dirt road now known as Witchduck Road, to John Harper's plantation near the mouth of the Lynnhaven River, which is now a private residence. Present-day reenactments are done nearby from a spot across from Ferry Plantation House along Cheswick Lane. News of the intended ducking had spread, and attracted people from all over the colony, who began to chant "Duck the witch!" According to the principles of trial by water, if Sherwood floated she would be deemed guilty of witchcraft; if she drowned, she would be innocent.
